Getting the High School Perspective: Laura Haverkamp, Dreher High School

Image
I taught in the high school setting for two years in Oklahoma.  I feel with each school lever, the focus in the library changes.  For high school, research skills takes a front seat.  Here is how standards are covered in this high school. Include: Inclusion all starts with a diverse collection.  This librarian makes a special effort to know the kids' names.  This makes them feel like they matter.  She then searches out different groups and gets their opinions on the library and programming that is offered.  She stated that this was how she discovered that her football nonfiction books were very out of date.   Reflection:  I love the idea of questioning students on their opinions and getting their feedback.  They are the primary users of the library and it is important to give them what they need.   Collaborate: Collaboration mostly happens with the English and Health teachers.  Some work with the history and sc...

Covering the Standards in Middle School: Francis (Susan) Mazur, Crayton Middle School

Image
My teaching background is primarily in the middle school age range.  Getting a perspective of different levels of schools, I feel, would give me different perspectives and ideas.  Ms. Mazur was a wealth of information of ways that she covers the domains of Include, Collaborate, Curate, and Engage.  Include: To make sure all are included, she first makes sure she creates an inviting space for all in her library.  She then advertises, advertises, and advertises using posters, the morning news, flyers, and the website.  She tries to create programing that appeals to a wide audience.  She rotates groups that she highlights, in her displays and book talks.  Then, she makes sure that her overall collection is diverse.  Finally, she creates a different club every semester rotating the group that she targets.  Reflection:  I love the idea of the rotating clubs.  At our school teachers pick what club they want to sponsor and many just...

Covering Standards Ideas from a first year Certified Librarian: Phoebe Blalock, Brockman Elementary

Image
Ms. Blalock was a first year certified media specialist last year.  With one(ish) year's experience, she gave me lots of good ideas of how to cover the four domains that I chose as a focus:  Include, Collaborate, Curate, and Engage. Include: To cover the include domain, Ms. Blalock focuses on making sure she is aware during the ordering process.  She makes a note to double check that she is building up and filling in any areas of her collection that need it.  She also makes sure, that during her read alouds, she covers diverse populations with her book choices.   Reflection:  I think completing a diversity check of my collection and making sure that I fill in gaps is very important.  Making sure diverse groups are highlighted throughout the year using read alouds, activities and displays should be done.   Collaborate: Many examples were given for this domain.  First, putting together a daily new show using the students help t...

Gaining Insight from Those with Experience: LJubica Arceneaux, Rosewood Elementary

Image
As a librarian, the set of standards that guide my decisions are the AASL's Standards Framework.  For my interview, I focused on the following domains:  Include, Collaborate, Curate, and Engage.  The details of how Ms. Arceneaux covers the four domains are highlighted below.   Include The two main areas that Ms. Arceneaux says she covers the Include domain is by diversifying the collection and through displays that she puts out throughout the year.   Reflection:  I think diversifying your collection is the standard answer and practice to cover this.  What I want to get out of these interviews are ideas that I can then take away and use in my program.  With the use of displays throughout the year, I could work with that...however, I feel that this may mean the typical African American display in February, So, I believe the key would be to highlight various displays that include all throughout the year.   Collaborate Ms. A...
